Style, it’s elusive. The definition of style is “a manner of doing something”. How uninspiring! We put a lot more into this word than Webster does (he clearly needed assistance In shopping). As elusive as style is to each of us, it’s most likely something you think about on a daily, or hourly basis depending how closely you follow the E channel. We love to think of our selves as individuals who exude personality thru our style, however most of us take our ques from the same places; celebrities, mannequins at the stores we love and magazines. How can we express our individuality if we are all getting our influences from the same place? How does someone go about choosing their own personal style?
I’d love for you to tell me how you have chosen to wear what you wear. I want to hear from all of you.
My personal style comes from a couple of looks I admire. I love the look of Katherine Hepburn. She wore the “pants as masculine/feminine” style with grace and casual effort. When I wear trouser pants I feel like I can take on the world. (psssst I’m wearing them now LOOK OUT WORLD). But, I also love the “ Housewives of Orange County” too-much-cleavage, big hair, look. I love to look a little sexy. So if Katherine Hepburn had a floozy sister, maybe Kitty Hepburn, that’s my look.
How about you? When you select clothing, do you see the vision? The “this will make me look like………(fill in the blank)” or do you see “Sale Rack” style, it fits and is $9.99 it must be my look. Or perhaps you have your own way of choosing what you wear. Let me know. I’ll be eager to hear. Let me know if it’s ok to share your thoughts.
I am sure your wondering “what does this have to do with hair, Nutjob? Aren’t you a hairstylist?” I will let you know in my next blog (even though you called me a Nutjob).
For me, style is determined by external influences. I usually will stick closely to style that i am complemented on by more than one person. Oddly enough when a contractor i deal with complements my hair (Odd from a hardcore cement client base, and thank you my stylist), i know that it must be a wow (especially since i am a guy and that just doesn’t happen). I also take into account what my girlfriend likes me to wear and what she thinks i look good in. After all this, style means nothing if you aren’t comfortable though. To be confident in your style, i think you have to feel comfortable when you wear it. it does no good to wear high heels if you trip when you walk (that just doesn’t look stylish at all). Style is what defines you and brings out your positive attributes so that other people say WOW!
Your influenced by the positive feedback from others, well then, great comment!! keep ‘em up Thanks
I’m a stylist’s nightmare. Literally. I don’t own a blow dryer, a curling iron or a bottle of mousse. My make up regime consists of chapstick. Now I’d love to say that I’m just a natural beauty and I don’t need all that other stuff; HOWEVER… the reality is I’m a busy mom with a full-time job, no extra time and just a hint of laziness.
Basically… I have no style. If I find a pair of pants that fit me and are within the budget, I’ll buy a couple pairs. Same for shirts. I’ll buy the same shirt in 3 different colors if I like it enough. Weekend clothes consist of a pair of jeans and T-shirt.
I’m probably in severe need of a make over but I’m not really concerned. I’m usually comfortable and that’s what matters most.
The absence of highly maintained style IS a style. It says volumes about your focus and priority. (ps. I have seen you and I know you are a natural beauty)
Thanks! If forgot to mention that I accent things with funky jewelry and bags. I usually make my own stuff. And it’s not the macaroni noodle kind of jewelry! I made a couple bags out of the kids’s old jeans/pants/skirts.
My style is ultra feminine with a retro twist. Grace Kelly, Sophia Loren and, of course, Marilyn Monroe are wonderful influences from the past. I also like modern women like Salma Hayek, Anne Hathaway, and, on occasion, Kim Kardashian. I’m always in skirts or dresses, high heels and vintage jewellery. I keep my hairstyle classic (a bob – sometimes with – sometimes without bangs).
